Jean-Marc Lofficier was the author of several Doctor Who reference books, most notably The Doctor Who Programme Guide, which was released in several editions and was the first professionally published attempt at a detailed episode guide for the series (not counting episode lists in works such as The Making of Doctor Who).

The Terrestrial Index contains "The History of Mankind According to Doctor Who", one of the first internal chronology of the Doctor Who universe which serves as a source for Lance Parkin's A History of the Universe series of reference books.

Lofficier has also compiled references for other entertainment franchises, including The Saint.

After discovering some similarities between the First Doctor and the titular character of the 1906 French novel Doctor Omega, he wrote an adapted and retold translation in which he put more parallels with this incarnation. This translation serves as a basis for some Doctor Who pastiches based around this character.
