Miss Jane was an elderly amateur detective. She was investigating the murder of Dr Gorley Herring at Betteredge Hall when she herself was murdered with poisoned tea. She was one of several amateur detectives whose murders was being investigated by a man and his partner, Georgie Price Jones, who were joined in their efforts by Iris Wildthyme, who had witnessed Miss Jane's murder.
