Jamie was the first story in the audio anthology James Robert McCrimmon, produced by Big Finish Productions. It was written by Mark Wright and featured Michael Troughton as the Second Doctor, Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon and Emma Noakes as Raven.

Publisher's summary[]

Mysterious dreams of lives never lived haunt an ailing prisoner in Edinburgh Castle, in the year 1776. Meanwhile, the Doctor arrives on another reluctant mission for the Time Lords, with the enigmatic Raven observing his every move.

How is the Doctor's erstwhile travelling companion, Jamie McCrimmon, connected with the terrifying deaths that plague the streets in the shadow of the castle? And will Jamie ever really know his true self again?

Plot[]

Part one[]

The Doctor is sent to Edinburgh in 1776 where he visits the Dog and Duck and learns from the innkeep of the deaths of a number of beggars. He is joined by Raven, who intends to observe him and assess his abilities, and finds the dessicated corpse of a young man after hearing his screams. He and Raven join Dr James Breck, who has also been investigating the murders, in examining the corpse at his home, where they release the psychic echo of a Hollow Wraith.

Accused of being a Jacobite after calling a group of soldiers "dirty Redcoats", the aged and feverish Jamie is tended to in the dungeons of Edinburgh Castle by Elen, a student of Breck's. He dreams of an adventure with the Doctor in the Paradox Jungle of Zeiton where they saved the Zeitonians from Hollow Wraiths, his experience at the Battle of Culloden, a life in which he is a laird and another where he is mocked by his neighbours for claiming to know the future. A Hollow Wraith appears and Jamie tells Elen to leave him and run.

Part two[]

Robertson is killed by one of the Hollow Wraiths, after which both of them disappear. Whilst Raven vanishes, the Doctor leaves the house with Breck to answer an urgent letter from Elen and instead encounters a version of Jamie who claims to remember their adventures together. A Hollow Wraith disappears after passing through Jamie and the Doctor disagrees with his insistence that they return to the TARDIS, instead going to join Breck at the castle and meeting the feverish Jamie who does not remember the Doctor at all.

The Doctor deduces that a Hollow Wraith, which kills Breck, has been feeding on Jamie's traumatic memories for decades and was augmented by the Time Lords' memory blocks. The Wraith has now taken Jamie's form and threatens Elen's life to force the Doctor into taking it to the TARDIS so that it might feed on others throughout time and space, but the Doctor reminds the real Jamie of their adventures and removes the Wraith's power source, causing it to disappear. He and Jamie say goodbye to Elen and leave in the TARDIS, which is dematerialised remotely shortly after Raven tells them that she will be in touch.
