James Ellis (15 March 1931-8 March 2014[1]) played Peter Warmsly in the Doctor Who television story Battlefield.
He was previously considered for the roles of Halrin Login in Full Circle, Packard in Warriors' Gate, Sir Ranulf Fitzwilliam in The King's Demons, Colonel Ben Wolsey in The Awakening, Raymond Arthur Stien in Resurrection of the Daleks, the Chief Officer in Vengeance on Varos, Lord Ravensworth in The Mark of the Rani, Shockeye of the Quawncing Grig in The Two Doctors, Orcini in Revelation of the Daleks (TCH 41) and King Yrcanos in Mindwarp.

Hs best known role was undoubtedly that of PC, later Inspector, Bert Lynch on police procedural Z-Cars, a role he played for over sixteen years.
