Behind the scenes[]
Varma had wanted to appear on Doctor Who for some time prior to finally appearing the series, though she was not particularly a fan of it as a child due to being scared of the Daleks. She has many friends who were in it who told her they had a lot of fun. She described the Duchess of Pemberton as a party animal who considers life to be a game. She was asked directly by Russell T. Davies to appear in the role.[2]
