Hyperion III above Mogar

The Hyperion III above Mogar. (TV: Terror of the Vervoids)

The Hyperion III was a galactic space-liner in operation in 2986, comprised of a main bridge, modified cargo hold, waste disposal, a gym, a lounge area, and various accommodation for passengers and crew.

The ship carried passengers and shipments of rare metals between Mogar and Earth. In its journey between the two planets in 2986, it was run by Commodore Travers and crewed by Edwardes, Janet, and Rudge, and amoung its passengers was Professor Lasky and her team, Doland, Bruchner, and Ruth Baxter. Additional passengers included Kimber, the Mogarians Atza and Ortezo, and Grenville who was posing as the Mogarian Enzu.

Its cargo included the newly-developed species of plant — the Vervoids — intended as a labour-force on Earth. When the Sixth Doctor and Melanie Bush arrived aboard the ship, drawn by a false mayday call, they found themselves trying to solve a series of murders and vandalisms. Eventually they deduced that the Vervoids were responsible and used a shipment of vionesium to kill them.

The events on the Hyperion III were relayed through projections from the Matrix at the Sixth Doctor's trial as part of his defence, but as the Doctor claimed that some segments had been altered, some details were open to speculation, such as who really destroyed the spaceship's communications room, as the Matrix displayed the Doctor committing the act with an axe. (TV: Terror of the Vervoids)

Later in his life, the Eighth Doctor wasn't certain whether the cabins on board the R101 reminded him of the Orient Express or of "the Hyperion", or "maybe" Storm Mine 4. (AUDIO: Storm Warning)
