Hercule Smith was an amateur detective. He wore a bow tie, had a moustache and spoke French with a broad Yorkshire accent. While dining at a restaurant, he was visited by Iris Wildthyme and Tom, who were helping the man investigating the murders of several amateur detectives, but was himself murdered with poisoned tea. After Tom pointed out that the waitress at Smith's murder was also the maid at Miss Jane's murder, the man went to the restaurant and discovered that the same kind of teacups were used at both murders, which enabled him to solve the case. Behind the scenes[]
- Hercule Smith is clearly intended to be a pastiche of famous literary detective Hercule Poirot.
