George Baker, MBE (1 April 1931-7 October 2011[1]) was an English actor who played Decider Login in the Doctor Who television story Full Circle.

He was originally cast as Thawn in The Power of Kroll. He was also considered for the roles of Ranulf Fitzwilliam in The King's Demons, Morgus in The Caves of Androzani, the Governor of Varos in Vengeance on Varos, Lord Ravensworth in The Mark of the Rani, Shockeye of the Quawncing Grig and Joinson Dastari in The Two Doctors, Orcini in Revelation of the Daleks (TCH 41), King Yrcanos in Mindwarp, Commodore Travers in Terror of the Vervoids, George Ratcliffe in Remembrance of the Daleks (TCH 44), Beyus in Time and the Rani, Joseph C, Gilbert M and Trevor Sigma in The Happiness Patrol and Peter Warmsly in Battlefield.

He shared his memories of Full Circle on the documentary All Aboard the Starliner.

Career[]

When the first Bond film, Dr. No, was in production, Ian Fleming singled Baker out to play Bond, but he had other commitments. He did, however, play characters in the Bond films The Spy Who Loved Me, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and You Only Live Twice.[2]

In 1976, he played Tiberius in the BBC's I, Claudius. From 1987 until 2000, Baker starred as Inspector Wexford in ITV's The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, which was perhaps his best known role. He also played the New Number Two in the first episode of The Prisoner and Sir Richard of Leaford in Robin of Sherwood.

Death[]

On 7 October 2011, at the age of eighty, Baker died of pneumonia following a stroke.[3]
