The Galactic Federation was the political entity that succeeded the Earth Empire as the dominant galactic power.

Philosophy and mission

The Federation was designed to ensure peaceful relations between the many species in the galaxy, with emphasis on cooperation rather than competition in matters of trade and policy. It was formed to help the unstable economy of the Galaxy after the collapse of the Earth Empire. (PROSE: Legacy)

Governance

The headquarters of the Federation was located on Alpha Centauri in 3375, though Jupiter's moon Io was eventually chosen as the Federation Chair. (PROSE: The Dark Path) Each member of the Federation took a chairmanship for a limited term. Any decision had to be by unanimous vote. (PROSE: The Dark Path, TV: The Curse of Peladon)

Law

The Federation guaranteed full planetary sovereignty to its member worlds, meaning that the Federation council could not interfere with the local laws and customs of individual planets. (TV: The Curse of Peladon, The Monster of Peladon)

Members

Known members included Alpha Centauri (TV: The Curse of Peladon), Arcturus (TV: The Curse of Peladon), Arviem 2 (AUDIO: The Revolution), Draconia (PROSE: The Dark Path), Earth (TV: The Curse of Peladon), Mars (TV: The Curse of Peladon), Peladon (TV: The Monster of Peladon), Terileptus (PROSE: The Dark Path), Vega (TV: The Monster of Peladon), Veltroch (PROSE: The Dark Path), Liasici (PROSE: Placebo Effect), Thoros Beta (PROSE: The Dark Path), Balhoon (COMIC: Reunion of Fear), Zygor (PROSE: The Bodysnatchers), Xlanthius (PROSE: Beige Planet Mars) and Emindar (PROSE: Vanderdeken's Children)

History

The Federation was formed after the collapse of the Earth Empire, in the early-to-mid 32nd century. Earth, New Mars, and Draconia were founding members. (PROSE: Legacy)

In 3375, the Federation tried to integrate the Empire remnants at Darkheart colony into the new system. (PROSE: The Dark Path)

In the 40th century, the Federation went to war with Galaxy 5. They made numerous attempts to broker a peace deal but the criminal group refused to cooperate. Two Galaxy 5 agents, Eckersley and Azaxyr, attempted to take over the federation's trisilicate mine on Peladon. They were foiled and Galaxy 5 quickly agreed to a peace deal. (TV: The Monster of Peladon)

The Federation had an incursion with the Ba-El Cratt in the 51st century after the Human Empire unknowingly entered an agreement with their enemies, the Cancri to supply them diamonds for their war effort. (PROSE: Diamond Dogs)

While it was a Federation member, Earth and its colonies were also organised into the Earth Alliance. (AUDIO: The Sirens of Time) The Federation was later replaced as the dominant galactic power by the Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire. (TV: Planet of the Ood)

A Federation was still around by the ninth millennium but had been corrupted by the descendants of Mavic Chen. An uprising of democrats sparked a civil war, and the Federation was replaced with the Union. In the tenth millennium, it bordered the Draconian Republic. In 10,674, the Doctor claimed the Union would be replaced by the brutal Junta in a century; he later said he'd made up some of his future history. (PROSE: The Crystal Bucephalus)
