- You may be looking for Jack Canning.
General Frank Hobson was a high-ranking officer in charge of the nuclear submarine HMS Revenge, a last-resort retaliation.
In an alternate Earth, he was Jo Grant's uncle and helped her get a job at UNIT. (PROSE: Blood Heat) In the Doctor's universe, Jo's uncle was Jack Canning. (PROSE: The Touch of the Nurazh)
In the alternate Earth, Hobson entrusted part of the book Computer Control Related Missile Launch Protocol Manual to Jo. It contained nuclear missile launch codes. He was going to use them to destroy the Silurians from the hidden Revenge. His plan was delayed for twenty years since Jo had become feral from race memory malaise and she was not found until 1993. When he finally got the codes, he took the submarine to carry out his plan, but died before he could fire the missiles. (PROSE: Blood Heat)
Having visited the alternate timeline, Benny Summerfield was aware of Hobson and Revenge. During the Ice Warrior annexation of Britain, she startled Lethbridge-Stewart by asking if he was thinking of contacting Hobson. (PROSE: The Dying Days)
Notes[]
- As revealed in Jim Mortimore's notes for the unreleased Fear of Light, Hobson was going to become a recurring villain in the Lethbridge-Stewart book series. He would have been a former friend of Lethbridge-Stewart from Sandhurst, but has since become an amoral agent of British military intelligence. When Candy Jar dropped Fear of Light, they lost permission to use Hobson and replaced him with Leslie Johnston. (According to Mortimore, the changeover would see most of the Hobson plot dropped as well: he was meant to eventually take over HAVOC for a period, be responsible for killing Sally Wright, had Gwynfor Evans compromised as an asset, and was working as a double agent for United States intelligence agencies. He would eventually be killed.)
