Opening narration box

The Doctor is trying to reunite three warrior brothers so they can combat a stellar invasion …

Summary

The Doctor and Martha have rescued two of the warriors. The TARDIS arrives at a prison on Haklok, a Tragellan colony on the Pacific Rim. The prison is littered with bodies, including the decapitated bodies of robo-assassins. Thaur suggests that the evil Angboda has sent them to finish off the warriors, first by imprisonment and now by killing them!

Dodging laser beams and robo-enforcements, the group find Jotastar planning his escape by breaking into the launch bay of a super-fast newly developed battlecruiser. Jotastar proudly announces it was he that caused such carnage. Checking Thaur's crystal to observe Angboda’s progress with her war fleet, the Doctor discovers that the fleet is carrying the green crescent insignia and are really hospital shipsdispatched to help the populations of the worlds that the three warriors conquered and crushed!

Their usefulness at an end, the Doctor and Martha are left behind when the three warriors steal the new battlecruiser and race off to avenge themselves on Angboda. The Doctor must stop them and sort out his mistake.

Characters

  • Tenth Doctor
  • Martha Jones
  • Thaur – One of three giant Viking warriors from the planet Norsum, exhiled, banished and abandoned on primitive planets (like Earth) by Angboda.
  • Vulsturg the Vast – One of three giant Viking warriors from the planet Norsum, exhiled, banished and abandoned on primitive planets (like Earth) by Angboda. Vulsturg was left bound to a rock on an unnamed planetoid, guarded by screaming creatures that rendered him unconscious before being released. Also known as Valiant Vulsturg.
  • Jotastar the Just – One of three giant Viking warriors from the planet Norsum, exhiled, banished and imprisoned on the Tragellan colony of Haklok by Angboda. A ruthless indiscriminate killer who led the warriors escape and return to Norsum in a stolen battlecruiser.

References

  • The Battles in Time comic strip sought to reinforce the association of its Doctor with the one seen on screen with ‘props’ from the TV series: blue/brown suit, intelligent-looking glasses, sonic screwdriver and psychic paper.

Notes

  • Supporting the series of collectable Doctor Who trading cards, the magazine, carried a regular four page, individually titled comic strip of the Tenth Doctor’s adventures.
  • The artwork and colours were bold and bright, reflecting the tone of the magazine and, as did Doctor Who Adventures, reflected the appeal to readers younger than those catered to by Doctor Who Magazine.
  • Credits are not shown for this strip.
  • The Doctor's sleight of hand is implied in frame, by lifting Thaur's chunky seeing crystal hung on a large heavy chain around his neck. When the Doctor produces the crystal it has apparently, been unclipped from the chain!
  • The green crescent emblem for medical assistance was first seen in TV: New Earth.

Original print details
