Sontaran scout ships, also called battlecruisers (TV: The Two Doctors) battlespheres, (AUDIO: Starlight Robbery) space pods, (TV: The Last Sontaran) pod ships, (AUDIO: The Five Companions) drop-pods (PROSE: A Soldier's Education) or gravity spheres, (AUDIO: Heroes of Sontar) were spherical spacecraft used by the Sontarans to scout ahead of fleets to investigate or infiltrate the enemy, usually the Rutan Host.

There were considerably smaller than nine metres in diameter, (AUDIO: Absolute Power) and equipped with a tractor beam. One was issued to every soldier upon starting training, and they were expected to clean and maintain their ship everyday. (AUDIO: The Five Companions) Scout ships had "automatic return," enabling them to return to a ship. (AUDIO: The Sontaran Ordeal) The Sontaran Subliminal Education Matrix claimed that each drop-pod was painted a bright and reflective silver so that they could be clearly seen against the sky, refusing to adopt the "cowardice" of camouflage. (PROSE: A Soldier's Education)
