Publisher's summary[]
Molaruss has a new ruler: the wise and benevolent Eleven - alongside his loving consort Miskavel - his many minds guiding every aspect of successful government. But the Eleven has a plan to elevate his people to a new level of consciousness. And he cannot resist inviting the Doctor and Constance to witness his ultimate triumph...
Plot[]
Having received an invitation or distress call, the Doctor and Constance return to Molaruss and are promptly arrested and welcomed by the Eleven to what has become his world. Miska takes Constance to her house whilst the Eleven gives the Doctor a tour of what he has accomplished, making the Doctor proud. The Eleven is bored of the Duominds, however, and plans on using nanobots called Elevations to give the Molarussians, with the consent of most of the population, eleven selves.
Miska reveals to Constance that, thanks to the Eleven's appropriation of Dr Varma's technology, she is no longer a Monomind and has had her personality multiplied. Whilst Miska makes a drink, Constance realises that she too has another self now as a result of breathing in Elevations, one who is outgoing and carefree and chooses to be called "Connie".
The Eleven activates the Elevations, causing the Molarussians to scream in pain. The process does not work on Burr, who makes the Doctor promise to save them before she dies. Constance develops further selves and is deadlocked in by Miska, meaning that the Doctor is unable to get her out when he arrives. He suggests that she talks to her other selves and she is soon reminded of her escapology lesson at Bletchley Park. Upon escaping through a vent, she and the Doctor head off to find the Eleven.
Miska learns from Tulun of the suffering and death and goes to see the Eleven, having developed nine other selves. She decides that she has to stop him but he refuses to and reveals that he plans on uploading a version of himself into each person through their Akkron implant. He initiates the process, resulting in Miska coming largely under his control, and begins to broadcast a speech which is interrupted by the Doctor and Constance. One of Constance's other selves tells the Eleven that, as a result of the Elevation, he is no longer unique. The Doctor appeals to the Eight for help.
The Doctor learns that there is a failsafe and has Tulun deactivate it, causing all the psychic feedback of the Molarussians' deaths to come back to the Eleven. He tries to remove his crown to stop it, but Miska prevents him from doing so until he reverses the Elevation. After he does so, Miska destroys it and Constance says goodbye to her Connie personality. The Doctor restrains the Eleven and hands him to Miska, who plans on sealing him in a temporal fault in his TARDIS, which was disguised as his and Miska's house, for a few thousand years as she travels the universe. The Doctor and Constance return to the TARDIS and leave.
