{real world stub}} The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular (Australia & New Zealand Tour 2014) saw the concert go on tour for the first time and comprised twelfth through eighteenth performances of the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular. It was performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Plenary Hall, Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, Melbourne, Australia; the Queensland Symphony Orchestra at Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Brisbane, Australia; and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at TSB Bank Arena, Wellington, New Zealand between 31 January-22 February 2014.

Overview

The concert was announced on 5 August 2013 by BBC Worldwide Australia & New Zealand.[1][2] It was conducted by Ben Foster and hosted by Peter Davison, who was announced on 17 December 2013.[3][4]

In Melbourne, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra was accompanied by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus and soloists Antoinette Halloran (soprano), Paul McMahon (tenor) and Greta Wilkinson (child soprano); in Brisbane, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra was accompanied by the Brisbane Chorale and soloists Antoinette Halloran (soprano), Iain Henderson (tenor) and Lauren Elvery (child soprano); and in Wellington, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra was accompanied by soloists Anna Pierard (soprano), Oliver Sewell (tenor) and Mia Vinaccia (child soprano).

There were seven performances:[5]

  • 31 January 2014 - an evening show at 7:30pm.
  • 1 February 2014 - a matinee at 2pm and an evening show at 7:30pm.
  • 8 February 2014 - an evening show at 7:30pm.
  • 21 February 2014 - an evening show at 6:30pm
  • 22 February 2014 - a matinee at 2pm and an evening show at 6:30pm.

There were sixteen individual pieces in all. Eight pieces performed. This was followed by a twenty-minute interval, then another eight pieces.

Some pieces followed the names and themes of their CD release counterparts, while others were extended pieces that used an overarching theme or initial name and piece to lead into other pieces.

Notes

  • Tickets for the Symphonic Spectacular went on sale on 9 August 2013 in Australia and on 30 August 2013 in New Zealand.
  • Initially the concert was only scheduled for four performances in Australia, but on 25 August 2013, three performances in New Zealand were announced.[6]
  • There were two video messages from Tom Baker.
  • The Wellington performances opened the 2014 New Zealand Festival.[7]
  • It was part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Doctor Who.
