Additional notes[]
- This annual was illustrated by Paul Crompton, who is clearly credited on the contents page.
- Many of the illustrations of Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor in this publication show him wearing the “Sherlock Holmes” outfit featured in The Talons of Weng Chiang (TV Story), possibly suggesting that these stories are supposed to take place immediately after that adventure. Meantime, for much of the comic strip “The Power”, the Doctor instead wears the voluminous white shirt he wore during much of The Deadly Assassin. These decisions were likely based on whatever limited photographic references were available to artist Paul Crompton at the time.
- As was typical for many of the World Distributor Dr Who Annuals of the period, the Doctor’s companion looks nothing like the performer who played the role on screen. This is presumably because the company had chosen not to license the likeness of Leela actress Louise Jameson, not least because her final episode had been broadcast in March 1978.
- Despite being likely written and compiled during the first half of 1978, this annual notably fails to include K-9 as a regular companion, despite the character having appeared in the series in The Invisible Enemy, broadcast during October 1977. Again, this may have been down to a rights issue; K-9 would feature in the following year’s Annual.
- The main front cover portrait of Tom Baker erroneously features the frilly shirt cuffs and “Roman ring” on the little finger of their left hand, in the style of the Third Doctor.
- Not for the first time, this World Distributors Annual features a somewhat anachronistic TARDIS crew for the titular year: the Doctor and Leela, as featured here, appeared in episodes originally broadcast between January and September 1977. By the time this Annual appeared in the shops, Season 16 had just launched with new companions Romana I and K-9 Mark II.
- A PDF version of the entire annual was included with the 2007 DVD release of The Armageddon Factor as part of The Key to Time DVD box set.
