Coal Hill was an area in Shoreditch where Coal Hill School was located.

The word 'coal' comes from the old English 'col', meaning 'dying ember'. The First Doctor speculated that, as Shoreditch wasn't known for mining, Coal Hill must have been named for a battlefield which had historically been on the site of the current neighbourhood.
