Clifford (or "Cliff") Jones was a part of the Wholeweal community in Llanfairfach, Wales. He fell in love with and got married to Jo Grant, though they later divorced.

Jo first knew of Cliff by reputation, as a brilliant Welsh scientist living at Wholeweal and investigating fungi. He was especially interested in their overlooked nutritional value so as a means to solve the problem of world hunger. Like the rest of the Wholeweal community, he opposed Global Chemicals and protested them at a public announcement by their director, Stevens. Interested in him to the point of hero worship, Jo went to meet him and encountered him in his laboratory, though she did not know what he looked like and so was surprised to find that he was the scientist whose work she had just broken in on and interrupted and was not pleased with his abruptness towards her. They spent some time in the Amazon looking for obscure fungi. (DW: Planet of the Spiders) Later, they had a son together, though by the 1990s they had been divorced. (EDA: Genocide). In a conflicting account (BFA: The Doll of Death) Cliff and Jo were still married in the 2000s.
