Clara the Clown was one of the deadly pawns used by the Celestial Toymaker. When not in a contest, Clara stayed in doll form. She spoke with a high-pitched, squeaky voice.
Clara was friends with Joey the Clown, and the pair took part in contests together. They were used by the Toymaker in a game of blind man's buff against Steven Taylor and Dodo Chaplet. When the clowns failed in the game, they reverted to their doll forms. (TV: The Celestial Toymaker)
In 2009, Sarah Jane Smith viewed a photograph of Clara on the Internet. (TV: The Day of the Clown)
Behind the scenes[]
- Bearing in mind that Cyril, the Knave of Hearts and the Kitchen Boy were all the same person, this may have been the case with Clara the Clown, the Queen of Hearts and Mrs Wiggs. However, this was never confirmed on-screen.
- As "The Celestial Toyroom" is currently missing from the BBC Archives, it is unclear as to whether Carmen Silvera was credited on-screen as 'Clara the Clown' or simply 'Clara'. For the DVD release, she is billed as 'Clara' on both the colour and black-and-white animated versions; and for the photographic reconstruction.
- Radio Times credits "Michael Gough as the Toymaker" for all four episodes, and "Dancers: Beryl Braham, Ann Harrison, Delia Lindon" for "The Dancing Floor"; with the other supporting cast members credited without specific roles under the heading "with" in the programme listings for all four episodes.
