Chris McAuley wrote Curse of the Cyberons, a story initially printed in the charity Doctor Who Annual 1988 by Terraqueous Distributors, then given a commercial audio release by BBV Productions as part of the Cyberon series, performed by Terry Molloy.
McAuley had previously worked with Molloy in the audio drama Voices of Dracula, where he played Renfield to Colin Baker's Van Helsing and Jessica Martin's Mina Harker. He had also previously contributed another charity story to Terraqueous's Doctor Who Annual 1989 (where he penned an origin story for Mags authorised by her creator Stephen Wyatt), as well as cowritten a short story with John Peel for The Cosmic Masque, the Doctor Who Appreciation Society's Doctor Who fanzine. In 2023 McAuley co-wrote a Dalek origin story with Davros actor Terry Molloy, which was published in Cosmic Masque #17.
McAuley was the colourist for the Devil's End spin-of comic by Lucky Comics, and, in 2023, contributed twenty-three short pieces to the charity publication Shadows of the Gallifreyan, which featured short stories told from the perspective of minor Doctor Who one-off characters.
In 2023, McAuley also returned to BBV Productions as the writer of a short P.R.O.B.E. audiobook, Guardian at the Gate.
McAuley is best-known for his part in the "StokerVerse", a franchise developed alongside Bram Stoker's descendant Dacre Stoker, designed to expand the universe of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Indeed, Curse of the Cyberons functioned as a crossover with the Dracula universe, with the Cyberons coming across a far-future version of Dracula himself, reduced to a disembodied head kept in stasis; this was followed upon in The Weapon and the Warrior, and BBV later released a third Dracula audio, this one devoid of DWU elements, cowritten by McAuley and Dacre Stoker. He also co-created the science-fiction Dark Universe with Claudia Christian, who played Peri Brown's mother in The Reaping.
