Charles IX (27 June 1550 – 30 May 1574) was the King of France from 1560 to 1574, and the son of Henry II and Catherine de Medici. Initially tolerant of the Huguenots, he was angered by the failed assassination of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny. Under his mother's influence, he authorised the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre.
