Charlemagne

Charlemagne, or Charles I of France, (742-814 (PROSE: The Time Travellers' Almanac)) was a French king. (PROSE: The Lonely Computer) He ruled the Frankish Empire for 46 years until his death, uniting Western and Central Europe for the first time since the Roman Empire. (PROSE: The Time Travellers' Almanac) According to the Tenth Doctor, his friends called him "Charlie." (PROSE: The Lonely Computer)

Charlemagne brought Europe out of the Dark Ages, restoring art and culture. (PROSE: The Lonely Computer) His reign saw a renaissance where European culture flourished, while Medieval Latin developed as Europe's first common language. (PROSE: The Time Travellers' Almanac)

Biography[]

Charlemagne was born in 742. (PROSE: The Time Travellers' Almanac)

In 785, he ratified the Council of Paderborn. (AUDIO: The Book of Kells)

In 800, he was crowned Emperor of Rome. The same year, he held court in a castle in the Ardennes in Belgium. Attempts were made on his life. One food taster died of mandrake poisoning. A feast was being prepared when the Tenth Doctor arrived for a pivotal meeting that afternoon with Pope Leo III that would make Charlemagne the Holy Roman Emperor.

History was nearly derailed when Momus abducted Charlemagne from his carriage en route to his castle. On Planet 12 of the Ridion Alliance, Donna Noble recognised a lot of the abducted dinner guests but had never heard of Charlemagne. The Doctor warned Charlemagne about the soup when he got back and told him he should treat the strange events as if they were a dream caused by too much cheese the previous night. (PROSE: The Lonely Computer) The Doctor began to recount these events to Agatha Christie when she referenced Poirot, a Belgian detective of her own creation. (TV: The Unicorn and the Wasp)

At some point, Charlemagne met the Eighth Doctor and Guy, and was surprised that the Doctor was travelling with a gorilla in a cravat and a waistcoat. (AUDIO: The Mummy Speaks!)

Charlemagne reigned until his death in 814. (PROSE: The Time Travellers' Almanac)
