Barry Gray (18 July 1908-26 April 1984[1]) composed the principal sound effects for the films Dr. Who and the Daleks and Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D., which were produced in the 1960s and starring Peter Cushing as Dr. Who.

Career[]

Gray is best known for his work composing themes, incidental music and electronic effects for numerous supermarionation and live-action series produced by Gerry Anderson including Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons and Joe 90, all of which crossed over with the Doctor Who universe to varying degrees, as well as UFO and the first season of Space: 1999. This included the Thunderbirds episode The Man from MI.5, which featured the Daleks, where he was credited as the music composer and director.

Some reference works erroneously credit Gray with composing the music for the two Dalek movies, but that was Malcolm Lockyer (Dr Who & The Daleks) and Bill McGuffie (Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 AD). The confusion arises from the fact that Gray, besides contributing electronic ambiences for the Dalek city and TARDIS interiors, also provided electronic noises that were dubbed into the Opening Title themes by Lockyer and McGuffie. In a similar fashion, some references mistakenly credit Gray with the theme and other music for the Doctor Who TV series, to which he never contributed at all. Although neither of the Cushing films used the famous Doctor Who theme by Grainger & Derbyshire, Gray did at one point contribute sound effects to Eric Winstone's orchestral rendition of it, which was recorded specially for a 45rpm record release in the mid 1960s and has been reissued on numerous compilation CDs.
