By another account, they were already colleagues at Coal Hill School, and met the First Doctor in Totter's Yard. (TV: "An Unearthly Child" et al.) The War Doctor only remembered this series of events, but the Barber-Surgeon met another version of the Doctor who told him about Barnes Common.
