Publisher's summary[]
Can Bernice Summerfield stop an alien invasion after it has happened?
Plot[]
Benny returns to Berlin to rescue the Doctor, who is resisting the neural-programming nanites and has been taken to the Eclectica where the partially-converted Compère keeps converting patrons in an attempt to make him give in and become a Cyber-Planner. Although most of the city's residents have been rendered inert by a hypnotic pulse, some are immune and hunted by the Cybermen to be harvested for spare parts. By resisting the pulse and feigning immobility to deceive the Cybermen, Benny reaches the Conformity Institute and continues her journey driving Sylvie's car, only for them to crash and Sylvie to be killed by a Cyberman because of her frailty.
The Doctor adapts his own inner workings and erases parts of his memory to resist the nanites, refusing to give in to save a lawyer, Johannes or Frieda from conversion. He remains resolute when Benny is brought before him by a Cyberman and shakes her hand before she is put in a conversion chamber which the Compère has slowed down to make sure that she suffers during the experience. However, he has reprogrammed the nanites within her to protect her and break down any and all Cyber-technology in Berlin thanks to their contact with the retrained nanites they made contact with in his hand. With his sonic screwdriver, he cancels out the hypnotic pulse.
The Cybermen are killed and their bodies taken away by the army, who will be unable to make any use of them as the nanites will break the armour down and leave only corpses. The Doctor apologises to Benny for letting her be put in a conversion chamber again and for keeping his plan secret and they return to the TARDIS as the restored Compère carries on the Eclectica's business as though nothing had happened, apparently having forgotten what has happened.
