Archie fought in World War I. He had been one of a group of six who had joined up in search of action and adventure along with Johnny, Rex, James, Tommy and the private. After Johnny and Rex were lost on the first disastrous push, Archie, deemed to be the weakest of the lot by the private, was ultimately killed by the constant mixture of mud and death underfoot.
