Animal was the fifth release in the second series of the Big Finish Productions' The Lost Stories range. It was originally written as a TV story for the 27th season of Doctor Who which was unproduced due to the series' cancellation.

It featured the Seventh Doctor, Ace and Raine Creevy, as played by Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred and Beth Chalmers, as well as the return of Brigadier Winifred Bambera, played by Angela Bruce. This was the first time since Battlefield that she reprised the role.
