Alan Cumming FRSE (born 27 January 1965[1]) played King James I in The Witchfinders. Much earlier in his career, he had appeared in the BBV Productions film The Airzone Solution (which was written by Nicholas Briggs and starred Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Nicola Bryant).
He was also offered the part of the Doctor by Russell T Davies but declined, saying he did not want to spend eight months out of the year in Cardiff.[2]
Personal life[]
Cumming is bisexual.[3] He was initially married to fellow actress Hilary Lyon, but they separated in the 1990s.[4] As of 2007, he is in civil partnership to Grant Shaffer.[5]
Cumming was awarded an OBE in 2009, for his services to film, theatre and the arts, and for his activism for equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community. In 2023, he announced that he had returned his OBE, due to "misgivings [he had] being associated with the toxicity of the British empire".[6]
