On 1 June, Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee was celebrated in the United Kingdom. Nyssa and Tegan Jovanka found themselves at Brendon Public School, where they met retired UNIT Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart. In the course of events, the Brigadier met a future version of himself from 1983, causing a paradox and leading to him suffering partial amnesia due to the Blinovitch Limitation Effect. On 5 September, Earth launched the Voyager 1 space probe. Onboard the craft was a gold-plated disc that contained images and recordings of Earth cultures, music, lifeforms and even human brain waves. (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary)

On Christmas Day, Paul Magrs and his Mam awoke early, rushing downstairs so Paul could open his presents. Paul put on the Pinky and Perky's Christmas Album, and unwrapped his presents. He got a Doctor Who jigsaw, that year's Disney Annual, several books, and a sled from Harding's. His father arrived at 7:30am, although he had told Paul's Mam he would arrive at lunchtime. He then asked Paul's Mam if she had got him any presents, causing Paul's Mam to have a go at him in the kitchen. Paul's father then took Paul to see his his Nanna and the rest of their family. Dr Fendelman accidentally awakened a fragment of the Fendahl while conducting temporal experiments with a time fissure created by a broken War TARDIS.
