- 23 February - John Levene was hired to return as UNIT corporal John Benton in The Mole-Bore (later Inferno), now more of a regular in the series and promoted to a sergeant.
- 27 February - The BBC's Audience Research Dept. filed an Audience Research Report on Spearhead from Space Episode 1. The episode rated a Reaction Index of 54, with new Doctor Jon Pertwee having been "accepted without question".[1]

- 5 October - In the US, the National Educational Television network was rebranded and relaunched as the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). This loose affiliation of broadcasters introduced countless UK-produced television programs to North American audiences over the next four decades. It became the primary broadcast home of the 1963-89 version of Doctor Who beginning in the late 1970s.

- 27 October - Script editor Terrance Dicks wrote to writer Louis Marks about Marks' story idea for Day of the Daleks, "the addition of the 'going into the future' storyline gives it the added science fiction feeling that we need." He however explained that he had not yet been given to all-clear to commission another season, and thus could not yet commission his storyline. He finally gave the order on 22 January 1971.
