1964 was a year in which a number of events important to the production of Doctor Who and its spin-offs occurred.
- Early 1964 - Moris Farhi submitted a six-episode script entitled Farewell Great Macedon and a single-episode script entitled The Fragile Yellow Arc of Fragrance. Neither were produced, but both would be published in 2009 and were adapted for Big Finish Productions' The Lost Stories range in 2010.
- 20 April - BBC2, the United Kingdom's third TV network, was launched. Henceforth, the main BBC network, which aired Doctor Who, would be known as BBC1.
