1554 was notable for being the year of the death of Lady Jane Grey, who had been deposed the previous year by Mary I. The Sixth Doctor visited Jane Grey in the Tower of London just before her execution by beheading. (AUDIO: The Marian Conspiracy) The First Doctor was also in the area, but knew he could do nothing to prevent the execution. (PROSE: The Nine-Day Queen)

Meanwhile, Mary tried to strengthen the position of English Catholics by enacting heresy laws against English Protestants. Particularly targeted were those who voiced support for her younger half-sister Elizabeth. (AUDIO: The Marian Conspiracy)
