I have a friend who doesn't have much time to watch Doctor Who but he loves trivia. He wants to watch episodes where an actor returns to the show since he and his partner stopped watching it (probably Matt Smith's last episode). Of special interest are actors from the classic series who returned, and actors who reprised their roles in the revival series. Please help. This is what I have so far:
Carole Anne Ford
First appeared in An Unearthly Child (1963) as Susan. Departed in Dalek Invasion of Earth. Reprised in The Five Doctors. Reprised in The Interstellar Song Contest.
William Russel
First appeared in An Unearthly Child (1953) as companion Ian Chesterton. Departed in The Chase (1965). Reprised in The Power of the Doctor (2022) as a brief cameo.
Nicholas Courtney
First appeared as Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart in The Web of Fear (1969) and reprised in The Invasion (1969) with the introduction of UNIT, before becoming a regular cast member in Spearhead from Space (1970). While the Doctor left him behind following Robot (1974), he made multiple returns in the classic series. In the revival series, the character was mentioned several times but never appeared, save for a reprisal of the role in spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures in the episode Enemy of the Bane (2008).
Katy Manning
Appeared as companion Jo Jones in Terror of the Autons (1971) and departed in The Green Death (1973). She reprised the role in an episode of the spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, The Death of the Doctor (2010). Cameo'd in The Power of the Doctor (2022).
Elisabeth Sladen
First appeared as companion Sarah Jane Smith in The Time Warrior (1973), and departed in The Hand of Fear (1976). She reprised her role in The Five Doctors (1985) followed a failed pilot for a spin-off series (K9 & Company) that was still treated as canon by this episode. She later reprised the role in School Reunion (2006) and The Stolen Earth/Journeys End (2009). A successful spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, followed her 2006 appearance in which she played the titular role. Elisabeth unfortunately passed away before completing the final season of The Sarah Jane Adventures, which was later acknowledged and translated into a character death for Sarah Jane in both a YouTube Lockdown special Farewell Sarah Jane (2020), and a mention in the main series in The Giggle (2023). In Empire of Death (2024), archive footage of Elisabeth Sladen in her role as Sarah Jane Smith was shown.
Janet Fielding
First appeared as companion Tegan in Logopolis (1981) and departed in Resurrection of the Daleks (1984).Reprised in The Power of the Doctor (2022).
Bonnie Langford
First appeared as a companion in the confusing and controversial Terror of the Vervoids (1986), having been called in before the Doctor actually met her. This paradox is never resolved on-screen and he never meets her for the first time. She departed in Dragonfire (1987). Reprised in The Power of the Doctor (2022) as a cameo, and properly in The Giggle (2023) and two-part season finale The Legend of Ruby Sunday/Empire of Death (2024).
Sophie Aldred
First appeared as companion Ace in Dragonfire (1987) and left in Survival (1989) due to series cancellation. Reprised in The Power of the Doctor (2022).
Tom Baker
Fourth Doctor Tom Baker appeared in The Day of the Doctor, possibly reprising his role. It is left ambiguous.
Colin Baker
Sixth Doctor Colin Baker reprised his role in The Power of the Doctor (2022).
Paul McGann
Paul McGann became the Doctor in 1996. Without a full series, he wouldn't reprise his role in the main series until the short prequel episode The Night of the Doctor (2013), which was released on YouTube before The Day of the Doctor. His next reprisal was The Power of the Doctor (2022), where he appeared as a mental projection.
Sylvester McCoy
Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy reprised his role in The Power of the Doctor (2022).
Richard E Grant
Richard E Grant played the 9th Doctor in Scream of the Shalka (2003), and was officially considered the 9th Doctor until Christopher Eccleston took up the mantle in 2004. He reprised the role in a special photoshoot, allowing his image to appear amongst several previous Doctors in Rogue (2023). While he did not act on-screen and the photoshoot has not been released to the public, that the photoshoot took place could be considered a reprisal of the role. He also played Walter Simeon and The Great Intelligence in The Snowmen (2012) and throughout the 2013 series (mainly in The Name of the Doctor).
Gabriel Woolf
Played Sutekh in The Pyramids of Mars (1975) and reprised the role in The Legend of Ruby Sunday/Empire of Death (2024). Also played Satan in The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit (2006).
Anne Reid
Played Nurse Crane in The Curse of Fenric (1989), and later the blood-sucking granny in Smith and Jones (2007).
Clive Swift
Famous in the UK for his lead role in the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, Clive Swift appeared in Revelation of the Daleks (1985) and returned to play a different character in Voyage of the Damned (2007).
Christopher Benjamin
First appeared in Inferno (1970), then appeared as Henry Jago in The Talons of Weng-Chang (1977) which spawned an audio spin-off (Jago & Litefoot). Later played the Colonel in The Unicorn and the Wasp (2008).
Misc.
The Special Weapons Dalek first appeared in Remembrance of the Daleks (1989). It was recast in Asylum of the Daleks (2013), where its role was taken up by a lookalike, but the original reprised its role in 2016's The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar.
The Midnight Entity (Midnight, 2008) returns in The Well (2025), played by the same complete absence of anything discernible.
