@Grandpa Lo70 Good point, unfortunately, I’m not too familiar with them as I haven’t seen them yet. But as you mention it that ongoing plot does sound somewhat familiar. I still haven’t seen the Eleventh or Twelfth Doctor yet. I plan on to soon though.
Full Circle -> Warriors’ Gate
The Halloween Apocalypse -> The Vanquishers

I personally like stories on another planet. I feel it provides the opportunity to tell more unique and creative storytelling than I think Earth episodes do. Because with Earth, you are dealing with what we know rather than what we don’t know. A sense of relatable reality. With other planets, you can transfer those same themes in a variety of creative ways. Of course, there are plenty of exceptions to my thinking. Although I do love the concept of historicals since that is technically what the show was founded upon.

My favorite story of Season 1 and easily the biggest surprise for me. Compelling story, moves at a brisk pace. The main characters and even the side characters are memorable and well written. Which the side characters often go one ear and out the other for me. But not in this case. I personally found the clash of cultures really interesting and well thought out. And the time travel piece of it puts a nice sci-fi twist that makes it almost timeless. This is a story that imo tapped into the potential Doctor Who has to offer. One of my top 5 favorite First Doctor stories and in my top 30 overall. Yes, I can see from certain perspectives it can be considered a bit of a product of its time, but if you get past that, there’s a real gem of a story here.

I love the Twilight Zone-esque vibes this one goes for. It’s genuinely a little creepy and sometimes I kind of wish there was a spiritual successor to this story as I think the unknown of the TARDIS can be exploited really well if done right. Most of the character work is done well but even with the paranoia factor I still think Susan pulling scissors on someone seems a bit out of character for me. But paranoia does indeed do strange things so I guess it’s not totally unbelievable. The final explanation with what was going wrong was a bit anticlimactic but it introduced a piece of the TARDIS that has been used before in other media, so it is important in that regard for introducing the fast return switch.

This is Doctor Who’s first true historical. And a good one at that. Where I come from, it seems a bit difficult to get access to Marco Polo in any significant capacity beyond audio or a detailed synopsis here on the wiki, thanks to it being missing and all. Which I used both. Otherwise, I think it’s a really solid story and historical that is never boring and all the characters are done well.

This story was better than I initially expected, but still not a great story imo. It has a great premise and even the first two parts are really good and the last two parts. But the middle is entirely forgettable. And the whole Marinus=Mondas and Voord=Cybermen is just trying to put more importance to this story than I think is needed or intended. I honestly have no idea if future appearances of the Voord are any better yet, and I don’t really clamor to revisit them. It’s perfectly watchable, but don’t expect to be amazed by it or remember significant portions long after it’s ended.
Yay! I’m not the only one! I have a “Living” list where every time I watch, listen, or read a new Doctor Who story I put it in my database and I average the scores for that Doctor to officially “rank” the doctors along with the stories. Because the whole point of the project was to finally decide who is my favorite doctor. Because I like or love them all to a point. I am currently around 270 stories between all doctors and mediums.
Anyway, my opinion about the Daleks is higher than An Unearthly Child:

I personally love the Daleks, I not only think it’s a classic Doctor Who story but a classic sci-fi story in general as well. Introduced the first of the “Big Three” enemies of the Doctor, introduced Skaro and the Thals, and not a bad plot to boot. Although I agree I think the story sags in the middle, and the last battle wasn’t very epic. But it was serviceable at the time and I think for the first time showed the potential Doctor Who could give with its moral messages and interesting worlds and civilizations. So like an Unearthly Child but better, I think it is absolutely essential viewing. Still I think watching the original first would be recommended over the colorized cut in half version or the movie with Peter Cushing. Even though that is also a decent version of the story.

I love the first episode. I think it brilliantly introduces the concepts and characters. It’s the next three that I think drags it down for me, with the exception of the main characters and their actions, the whole argument about fire between the cavemen does get tedious for me. However, tensions are built up well, the threats to the characters feel believable and their reactions understandable under the extraordinary circumstances they find themselves in. Despite my mixed opinion, I do not undermine its importance to overall Doctor Who and still would consider it absolutely essential for anyone new and old to Doctor Who.
I agree The War Games can get a bit repetitive but I still think it’s an awesome story and is my personal favorite Doctor Who story. Tied with Genesis of the Daleks, But I think War Games edges over Genesis for having a better ending. Otherwise, Inferno is my favorite Third Doctor story. Seen it twice and both times was a tense phenomenal build up to a very bleak ending. City of Death was really good but in my opinion a tad overrated (not by a lot though for me). I haven’t seen Blink, Heaven Sent or Turn Left yet so can’t say there.
@BenGMan730 Yeah! It was a surprise to me too. Watched it about 3 days ago after I haven’t seen it for about four or five years and realized he looked a bit familiar. Looked him up and lo and behold, it was Paul McGann, practically unrecognizable though since he was bald and played kind of an insane character in the movie.
