Let's start with the title: anyone will be able tell you that the woman who fell to earth is not in fact the Doctor. It's Grace. Grace is possibly the most important character in this series, despite barely being in it. She's the ghost that hangs over Graham (and Ryan), forcing them together over the course of the series. There are more bombastic and eventful series openers than this—in fact, almost all of them. But I remember specifically it was about 30 seconds into my first watch of this when I said out loud "I'm going to like this"—my favourite scene is something as simple as Ryan stumbling across the alien... thing in the forest and touching it, just because you probably would. It appeals to many of my personal feelings about Doctor Who at its core. The Woman Who Fell to Earth has a big cast, which means Chibnall can make it feel more like a real place than your average Who whometown, and as such manages to give these characters a greater sense of realness than many of them have. I think it's very, very good. Ultimately, anyone who hadn't already made their mind up about the Chibnall/Whittaker era before it had even begun should have been able to watch this and feel some degree of optimism.
