I always liked Moffat a great deal, but I think the first time I properly recognised what he could do with the show (and, eventually, did) was when in this episode the Doctor and Clara take the staircase to the Tardis sitting iconically on a cloud. It's fantastic, but what I mean by that is it's fantastical—like something from a fable. It's whimsical, and it's delightful, and then it's all brought tumbling down by Clara saying "It's smaller on the outside". If there is a better distillation of a Moffat script I'm not sure what it is. That's the way to do it!
Beyond that is the fact that, personally, having never warmed to Amy, Clara was a hit the moment she appeared here. I also like the design of the Snowmen and of course love Vastra, Jenny and Strax. This looks like it's one of my favourite episodes ever—it isn't at all. But it heralds an era of the show that I greatly prefer and is entirely visually distinct. Even the redesigned Tardis is an improvement.
