The truth is there is no episode that I'm more truly heartbroken isn't better than it is, than this one. The reason that's, strangely, a positive, is that the central conceit is perfect. As Yaz says, "what's the point of having a mate who can time travel if you don't nip back to see your gran when she were younger?" It appeals to all of our instincts—if history explains the world around us, why wouldn't you start with your own family, especially if you know there's a big secret hidden in its past? The cinematography and direction are often breathtaking, and Akinola's score is IMO one of the best in the show's history. The special version of the end credits theme is a stunner. There's so much that's brilliant here that what isn't sticks out like a sore thumb. But I adore it nonetheless.
As much as I'm conflicted whether it would be a good idea in our current time to bring back the so-called "pure historical", this is definitely an argument for it. Vinay Patel is a Thijarian Hive away from striking gold at his first attempt.
