Mine: None.
They say the n word and use a slur in the title.
@Anastasia Cousins Missing episode or Episode 4?
@BenGMan730 not sure which part been a while since i listened to it. But every episode has the Slur in the title.
Think episode three may be the one with the N word. It’s during the hopscotch bit (the linking narration is spoken over it in the audio version and it is cut from the animated version)
Haven’t seen it. Read about it but I cant comment. Still cant believe they allowed the use of the n word in that story.
Did they really?
If I was irritating I'd pretend to start moaning about censorship...
There is a degree of context to the racist word, but it's minor and doesn't make it any less racist. I don't think there was racist intent in choosing the phrase, but that equally doesn't change the phrase itself. It's a horrible moment in what is otherwise a great story, and I'm satisfied with the lengths every subsequent release has gone to to rectify/censor it. (I'd be fascinated to know what they'd do should The Hall of Dolls ever be found.)
Main point
My major issue with this serial is the fact it's missing. Duh. But it's such a physical story and the audio, while still super, doesn't remotely do that justice. Maybe the grotesque new animation does, but I'm in no rush to find out. The other issue is once again with poor Dodo. I really do feel for Jackie Lane, because she's absolutely terrific...in a role that requires her to be the biggest ignoramus the Tardis has ever carried. The way Dodo acts with Cyril in The Final Test is so completely unnatural that it manages to make Steven seem like the grounded one, despite having a vocal inflection that sounds like it should be coming from a cartoon bear. Once again I find myself wondering how much better this would be with Ben and Polly, rather than this less-than-dynamite duo.
(At least from what I can tell through the surviving images and episode four), the extremely limited budget this one was under REALLY hampers it and stops the Toymaker's domain from feeling like the bizarro dreamscape that it should (though the animated reconstruction largely mitigates this issue). It was also a bad idea to play this plot largely comedically in my opinion, as it could have been something really interesting and creepy if played mostly straight (The Mind Robber would go on to prove this a few seasons later).
Also, Dodo is a naïve moron throughout for no apparent reason, and the story uses the hard R in an explicitly racist way, which is nearly enough to make me reject the story out of hand on its own.
(I’m not talking about any “of it’s time” issues)
But this story is a bit overhyped. While the surviving episode four is EXCELLENT the rest of the story does drag a bit. I didn’t notice it until I watched the animation rather than just the audio but it’s one of the few I would say actually BENFITS from being lost and reanimated because the visuals in the animation are what make it more bearable to watch.
What do you think?
