The Devil's Chord was good. Space Babies, not so much, but I am loving the Doctor and Ruby's vibe. It's very fun.
I'm honestly surprised at how much hate Space Babies has been getting. I was smiling all the way through! It was like I was watching late-2000s DW again.
@WaltK It's never nice to hear an episode is getting a lot of "hate", even if 90% of the time that just means any sort of criticism. It's hard, because I know people will be all "you just don't have a sense of humour". I promise, I like fun. But this was just asinine. The phone scene is lifted beat-for-beat from The End of the World—I mean, if you're going to steal, at least steal from someone else. I honestly don't know what he was thinking.
Considering the majority of takes I've seen are "Ncuti's performance was the only highlight", it does come off very much to me as people being unusually salty over what I thought was just a fun, bonkers episode with plenty of narm charm.
@WaltK I mean, I agree that his performance was pretty much the only highlight. I don't think that's people being salty, necessarily. His chemistry with Ruby is great too, although I didn't think Millie was as impressive as in the Christmas one. But Doctor Who has done bonkers before loads of times. The Celestial Toymaker was bonkers. The Mind Robber was bonkers. But I found that those stories used that to challenge the audience rather than insult them. There are myriad things actually wrong with it—things like the script wasn't very good, or the rapid cutting actually hampered the storytelling, or the painful and completely unnecessary exposition made it feel like you were watching an audition—but they got lost somewhere in the whirlwind of methane. I like mad, and I like fun. But I also like good, and I found that perilously lacking.
I like Ncuti Gatwa as 15th doctor, he is a first doctor who is Black
Ive liked/loved them. except for the musical one. that was quite painful for me to get through. goblins: great! baby bogeys: amazing! alice in wonderland: quite bad to say the least
I think both episodes, especially the devils cord, gave me heaps of hope and excitement for what's to come. The un afraid-ness to be silly and make jokes, while actually being decently funny is something that the last doctors seasons lacked. And there was still some serious moments. I only hope we get more scary-ish/creepy episodes because they're always good, think 'don't blink'. Also some off format episodes that change up the pace a bit, those are always interesting. but that's just me.
Well, I liked better Space Babies than The Devils Chord. I absolutely love The Beatles (although lately I've been listening to more metal and hard rock than rock n roll), but idk, I found the episode quite boring tbf. I gotta say that the Maestro is too much Alice in the wonderland -ky (if you get what I mean).
I do understand the need to set up stuff for a bigger plotline but idk, I didn't like the character overall, it seems too much like the toymaker, which was good for an episode but nothing more imo.
Aside from that, the Assimilation² reference in Space Babies was delightful and the chat in 1963 London about the Doctor and Susan was great as well. I loved the soundtrack with the little chromaticism leitmotif, and the way they break the fourth wall playing the Dr. Who theme on the piano several times (which kinda reminds me to the ending of S.9 when the Doctor played Clara's theme on the guitar).
I have high hopes for Steven Moffat returning as director for the third episode, he has some great stuff in R.T.Davies era, and I'm sure he can make great stuff again.
What do you think?
