@Kevin 'Chalky' Kaiba What?
@FH2104, he's always grumpy. And I've heard it said, he hates his roles. Very disdainful.
@Kevin 'Chalky' Kaiba I think he's just honest. He didn't like being in make-up for eight hours for Thor, he didn't think he did the comedic parts of Doctor Who very well, and he didn't think he was great as Macbeth either (neither did many other people, which was particularly frustrating because it was the role he had always wanted to do.) Disdainful suggests he has a lack of respect, when the fact he has high standards would suggest the opposite.
We're all welcome to our opinions, but all the work he does for various charitable causes IMO renders "shame about the real person" an extremely misleading claim.
I thought he did the comedy parts brilliantly.
Even better, I think he did NOT do the comedy parts brilliantly: by which I mean, that scene where he's yelling at the Dalek was supposed to be comical but he played it straight and it was so much better for it. He was fantastic. Knew exactly how to play a scene.
@FH2104, I'm not doing anything of the sort. He's often spoken quite bluntly about a lot of his jobs, and it does come across as disdain.
@Kevin 'Chalky' Kaiba I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "I'm doing nothing of the sort". I'm merely suggesting (ie telling you) that saying "shame about the real person" is going to send impressionable people off with a severely wrong impression when all you can add is that he's occasionally blunt about some of his previous jobs. He's also positive about many of them. What you interpret as disdain (meaning contempt and lack of respect) is almost always aimed at himself, rather than at the people he was working with.
@FH2104, your remark on shaming; I wasn't shaming the guy. He's...very often come off as I described him.
Though regards his fallout with TPTB on series one, who's right and who's wrong?
@Kevin 'Chalky' Kaiba Well, given that the allegations were of bullying from "TPTB" towards other members of the crew, I'd hope it's obvious who's right. Obviously we don't know for sure what happened. But it's pretty clear something did, and I personally see no reason to disbelieve Eccleston. Especially with some of the stuff that's come out since then in mind.
@FH2104, then should there be a general boycott of the show, especially since TPTB from the period have returned?
Nine - I enjoyed him on the first watch through, but as he was my introduction to the character/franchise, I didn't have much basis for comparison. Now that I've seen 9-14 and 1, my appreciation for the 9th incarnation has grown and he's one of my favorites.
Jack - Entertaining and a good character, I think he ended up being a bit overused for what he brought to the table.
Season 3 - A significant improvement over its immediate predecessor, but not a personal favorite.
Midnight - Really well done but not a high rewatch value in my view.
What do you think?
