Honestly, "trying to have fun" isn't a great look in this instance compared to Twice imo. Twice was trying to say something, it was trying to comment on the past of the show and the future, trying to justify the show's continued existence and ask us all to keep watching even as we moved past outdated prejudices that have been with us throughout the history of the medium.

Power of the Doctor was literally made when they thought the show was about to be canceled. Think about that. The show was about to be canceled, and they went for some fun fanwank. They didn't try to justify the show, they didn't try to tell a coherent story or give good character moments, or have some level of thematic messaging about why The Doctor is a force in the universe that must exist. They just assumed that Doctor Who is important in its own right and went full nostalgia.

It's just irresponsible.

@Najawin Yeah but ‘Twice Upon a Time’ was also not great in its execution. But that one thought it was a masterpiece. This one knows it’s nonsense. I’m not saying this episode is better, I just enjoyed it more. At any rate it’s better than the previous two specials.

I saw. I'm just not sure I agree with the premise that Twice thought it was a masterpiece. It was written sort of last minute since Chibnall didn't want to write a Christmas special. So I didn't really feel like continuing.

@Najawin The review actually has nothing to do with Twice. It’s about how Chibnall actually made EXACTLY what he wanted to make with Power of the Doctor, whether or not it was actually good.
